Signing a used car loan agreement can feel like the finish line—but it’s also the moment where small oversights can cost you the most. Before you put pen to paper, it’s worth slowing down and reviewing exactly what you’re agreeing to.

Here are five things every borrower should verify before signing.

1. Interest Rate Type: Fixed vs Floating

A fixed rate stays the same throughout your tenure, giving you predictable EMIs. A floating rate can change with market conditions, which may lower your cost over time but adds uncertainty. Ask your lender which type applies and how often floating rates are revised.

2. Prepayment and Foreclosure Charges

Many borrowers plan to repay their loan early once their finances improve, only to discover steep foreclosure penalties. Always check the exact percentage charged and whether it reduces after a certain period.

  • Ask if partial prepayments are allowed without penalty.
  • Confirm the foreclosure charge as a percentage of the outstanding principal.
  • Check if charges differ for fixed vs floating rate loans.

3. Loan-to-Value (LTV) Ratio

The LTV ratio determines how much of the vehicle’s value the lender will finance. A lower LTV means a larger down payment from you, but often results in better interest rates and easier approval.

The higher the down payment you can afford, the lower your overall interest burden across the loan tenure.

4. Hidden Fees and Processing Charges

Beyond the headline interest rate, agreements often include processing fees, documentation charges, and insurance bundling costs. Request a full breakdown of charges before signing, not just the EMI figure.

5. Hypothecation and RC Transfer Terms

Your vehicle’s registration certificate (RC) will show the lender as a hypothecated party until the loan is fully repaid. Confirm the process and timeline for hypothecation removal once your loan closes, so you’re not left chasing paperwork later.

A little diligence before signing can save you thousands over the life of your loan—and a lot of stress along the way.
